City Gets Caught in the Act

Submitted by admin1 on Tue, 06/28/2011 - 13:21

Thank you to Con Filardi for this amazing series of photos.  On Saturday, Adam Wood had said in an e-mail that they would not do any further work and in his conversation last night Mayor Finch did not mention any further work and indicated that he would work with us.  However, despite these assurances, around 10:45 AM, Tuesday, June 28, the City came in with a Barber beach combing machine to do more work in the newly established beach.  It made one run down the beach and then turned the corner and got stuck in the tidal estuary side of the sand spit. The equipment in the photo released oil into the water, which is an environmental violation.  The area where the sand and plants that were scraped off were dumped was in an intertidal zone, so that is a violation.  Finally, as we said before this is horseshoe mating season, a species that is rapidly declining, and you see the wheel of the vehicle right next to two mating horseshoe crabs.  The DEP was on sight to witness first hand many of these violations.  The man with the clipboard is the DEP enforcer.
